I am building a clock, and I need suggestions?
I am builidng a clock which is about 19 inches high. i don't know what type of wood to use, such as red oak, popler, willow, maple, etc... Which type of wood would look best for it?
Depends on where you want to use it. I like cherry, because it is a nice color, looks good with a clear coating on it, and its a hard wood. It fits in on a formal clock, but can look informal as well. Can look good in modern style, shaker style, or "old fashioned" style.
Oak is good, but it is a more informal wood and looks better on "old time" style clocks. Willow is too soft for the main parts of the clock. Maple is OK, but it is difficult to work with (one type is called rock maple!) and I don't like how it finishes up--too light with a clear coat, and a darker coat looks uneven to me.
