Wall decor for mission style apartment?
I am looking for a piece of wall art to go on the wall behind my couch. Preferable in a 24x24 size. My living room has black leather furniture, mission style medium oak tables, and a large medium oak trunk/coffee table. I have accents of black throughout the room. Wall sconces and clock are of brushed bronze and dark amber glass. I would like a stretched canvas or painting type artwork over the couch. I could really use suggestions for colors and links to actual examples of artwork to go with my decor. Thanks for all your help!
Xiomy- that is so funny! That is actually one of the pieces I was contemplating! So nice to have my choice confirmed. Thanks!
That first suggestion wouldn't go with Mission Style. Abstracts like that were not compatible with the "arts and crafts" naturalistic ethic of the Mission movement. Most artwork from that era was either "plein air" realistic landscapes, scenes from romantic legened or designs that looked very much like Japanese woodblock prints. They almost always used plain, almost hand-made looking wide dark oak frames, no glass and colored or no mattes. Here is one example of "plein air":

This artist's work below would be perfect but is very costly -- but you might find something similar for less somewhere:

here are some Japanese landscape woodcuts:

I also think the paintings of Gustav Klimt look wonderful with Mission colors and decor:

As you can see, most of these links are at www.art.com. You can get virtually any size of any of their thousands of art prints and most car be ordered on a canvas transfer. You can do a search on "arts and crafts" and it will show you some other art from the Mission era such as designs by Charles Rennie Macintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright.
But another source people often neglect is small galleries and art fairs in your own city. You can often buy original landscape or still life paintings and prints from the artists themselves that will be unique and may be actually valuable some day.
I also recommend browsing through books on "Mission Style" in bookstore home design or architecture sections. This will give you a good idea of typical artwork of the era.

Wall Shelves – Organizational Break Through
One can imagine living in the early days and the need for organization. Humans do not like clutter it can affect your mood, drive and overall persona. Wall shelves are one way that helps eliminate the disorder around you. It’s versatile, gives you more storage space and dresses up your walls.
Wall shelves can be a focal point in a room or fill the entire room. It’s a functional attractive solution to our every day hectic lives. They are made with innovative designs that range from classic to exotic. They come in many sizes, styles and finishes. There are wall shelves in contemporary, traditional and modern designs. Some of the finishes that are available are dark and light oak, mackintosh, mahogany, copper, bronze, stainless steel and glass, just to name a few. They are available in every color and grain. There are also various price ranges to choose from. Starting at least expensive, you have your choice of wooden or plastic. When it comes to mid price range, there is particle board and the most expensive is glass, solid timber or clear acrylic.
You can use a shelving unit to divide a room or display collectables. They can hold books, photos, mementoes, clocks, appliances and other decorative items. You can find them ready made or have them custom built. Whatever you choose they maximize your wall space. They usually have easy to assemble instructions or you may have to hire a handy man or contractor.
There are many options for wall shelves in the market place. They have free standing, hanging, modular, adjustable, floating and fixed. There are also a variety of shapes. They come in rectangular, round, square, curved and triangular.
Adjustable shelving is the most practical. With pre assembled units you can fasten them to a wall and transport them easily in one piece. This is also a good choice if you tend to rearrange your room often. Free standing shelves fit inside a wooden or metal frame. Another option is purchasing one with a track system. This allows you to move and adjust shelves to any height or width. You are able to tailor the shelves to fit your needs. This is ideal for a child’s room, so they can have items placed at their height for easy accessibility. For a formal room, make certain you purchase a shelving unit that is sturdy but also matches the architectural style of the room.
When hanging wall shelves you must have proper wall attachments and proper bracket spacing. This is needed to prevent sagging of the individual shelves. It is important and wise to measure before you make the purchase.
The wall shelves you choose will seem to make the room come alive with its charm and beauty. This organizational addition will become an integral part of your room.
