Computer History And Methodology By Mensur Boydas

  1. HISTORY OF WHAT     (Fraunfelder)

Five concepts in Fraunfelder:

PONG

In today's world video games are an essential part of millions' life and it has a bigger market than films. Bushnell who is an electrical engineer student had several attempts to create games but they were not successful. Then he made a game called "Pong that that is a ping-pong simulator that required nothing more of the player than to twiddle a knob to move an onscreen paddle and hit a ball (Fraudliner, Mark, 2006). The game Pong was the world's first video game in the early 70's. This is a modern version of the game. The first screen is where you select how you want to play by moving the joystick: UP and DOWN to select Human vs. Human, Human vs. Computer or Computer vs. Computer. The computer vs. computer game to plays forever or until someone reset the game using the reset switch. You start serving by pressing fire; it is also likely to change direction and speed of the ball using fire. The player who has the serve will get points. If the player with the serve misses the ball, then the serve goes over to the other player. The paddles are moved up and down with the joysticks. It is possible to smash (increase speed) by pressing FIRE, and when doing so it is also possible to guide the ball by moving joystick up or down. When someone wins a game over picture will show and tell who won. Bushnell started a business called Atari and started selling Pong to arcades and bars. He had more luck this time and people love the game. Then in 1974 Atari made a home version of Atari but did not have the money to keep up with their competitors, afterwards Warner Communications bought the company. It is this game that triggered the video games history and personal computers that people wanted to play the game in their computers at home.

NINTENDO GAMEBOY

Nintendo Game Boy is a system of a compact game developed and manufactured by Gumpei Yokoi who works for the company and it is released in 1989. "It is the bestselling video game player ever and 168 million units have been sold since it was introduced (Fraudliner, Mark, 2006). This was another hit in the history of computing and video game industry. People were buying it to play a game called Tetris that is written by Russian Alexey Pazhitnov. Computers were invented in the early 70's and by the invention of video games computers became more popular because people wanted to play the games at their home without any distraction like workspace. The Nintendo Game Boy had a lot of contribution to the history of video games as it pushed its competitors to invent a more advanced, cooler console, video games and etc. to attract the peoples' attention to keep themselves in the business. Then in the following years Nintendo advanced its gaming consoles.

WORLD WIDE WEB

The World Wide Web has transformed the computer and communications world like nothing else before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unique combination of qualifications. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information broadcasting, and a medium for cooperation and interface between individuals and their computers without consideration of geographic distance.

These people are the ones who contributed in the development of World Wide Web.

  • 1945: Vannevar Bush

  • 1960: J.C.R Licklider

"Man Computer Symbiosis" (Pre-W3C, 2006).

  • 1962: Douglas Englebart

  • 1965: Ted Nelson

"Ted Nelson coins the term "Hypertext" in "A File Structure for the Complex, the Changing, and the Indeterminate". 20th National Conference, New York, Association for Computing Machinery" (Pre-W3C, 2006).

  • 1968: Douglas Englebart

  • 1969: ARPANET

"Advanced Research Projects Agency commissions ARPANET to conduct research on networking. First ARPANET nodes connected" (Pre-W3C, 2006).

  • 1971: Ray Tomlinson

"Ray Tomlinson of BBN creates email program to send messages across a distributed network. 1972: Tomlinson expands program to ARPANET users, using the "@" sign as part of the address" (Pre-W3C, 2006).

  • 1974: Vint Cerf / Bob Kahn

"Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn publish "A Protocol for Packet Network Interconnection", which specified in detail the design of a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)" (Pre-W3C, 2006).

  • 1978: TCP/IP

"Part of TCP splits off, becoming the Internet Protocol (IP)" (Pre-W3C, 2006).

As you can see it was a quite history to be able to come up with the extraordinary invention of all time that is a part of millions of people around the world. With the invention of the internet users of the computer tremendously increased as it is convenient in a lot of ways and are increasing still. It became the main part of computer, now a computer without the internet is just a machine that computes and functions as a gaming console and a type-writer. It is quite interesting to watch as the history unleashes its chambers to present. All of the parts developing and combining, emerging to create the computer as it happens in Transformers.

GOOGLE

The search engine started as a research project by a Phd student student at Stanford in January 1996. " Today more than 100 million people ask Google, the number one search engine on the world" (Fraudliner, Mark, 2006). Google became the reference of the world to anything from a to z from billions of Web pages in just a matter of seconds. Despite the fact that it's free, it made a fortune for its founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. "The company makes money by advertising and by licensing its search technology to corporations" (Fraudliner, Mark, 2006). The Google search engine attracted the growing number of Internet users, who liked its simple design.  Google has begun selling ads related with keyword searhes. The advertisements were text-based to maintain an uncluttered page design and to maximize page loading speed. Google has a lot of features and some of them are earth, video, scholars, groups, g-mail, image search and many more. Google is really the main search engine that assists millions of people around the world every day. It is really interesting to exposure the discourse develops as the picture of technology painted part by part. All of these are a part of computer that is enabling games, videos, connectivity and many other things for the society of earth. Google will become more important as the World Wide Web gets developed. The history showed that the future will be bright as technology develops.

  1. WHO AND WHERE: ACADEMIA (Markoff)

Doug Engelbert:

He is generally known as the inventor of computer mouse teamed with Bill English. His group and he accomplished many technological establishments and some of them are hypertext, human computer interaction, networked computers and precursors to GUIs.

The figure shows that the very first computer mouse engineered by Engelbert showing the wheels that directly contacts the working surface. According to the historian of Science Therry Bardini believed that Engelbart's complex personal philosophy that drove all his research endeavors shoved the modern application of the concept  to the philosophy and use of tech. The historian also says that Engelbart was strongly influenced by the principle of linguistic relativity developed by Benjamin Lee Whorf. "Where Whorf reasoned that the sophistication of a language controls the sophistication of the thoughts that can be expressed by a speaker of that language, Engelbart reasoned that the state of our current technology controls our ability to manipulate information, and that fact in turn will control our ability to develop new, improved technologies" (Wikipedia). He was an uncontrollable and different from his group of people. He was dealing with SRI projects. Markoff says that Engelbart and Rosen who is another engineer in the group had met when Engelbart was hired at SRI, and of course he had immediately told Rosen about his dream for building Bush's Menex information search and retrieval machine.  Rosen was impressed, but he had not thought much about it since. Thereafter the researches took a high road and one day Engelbart wrote some thoughts on a paper and Rosen took it to Pentagon and the man from Pentagon wanted to see him. He was granted the first research by $25,000. Then he made much advancement in the digital technology such as the computer mouse. He visualized and developed many of his user interface ideas back in the mid 60s, long before the personal computer revolution, at a time when people were kept away from computers, and could only use computers through UN armed forces and when software tended to be written for vertical applications in proprietary systems.

Engelbart later revealed that it was nicknamed the "mouse" because the tail came out the end. In an interview with SRI patented the mouse then for the value of $40,000 Apple had licensed the product.

Engelbart is a great contributor in technology of computer and digital world. Markoff says that when was still largely about data processing; Engelbart had put together almost all of the critical components of modern personal computing; hypertext, graphics, multiple windows, efficient navigation and command input, collaborative work, and a mouse pointing device. The list here was collaborated nearly 40 years ago, symbolizes the computer we are using right now. This is pretty interesting journey.

John Mc Carthy:

He is now a Professor Emeritus. John McCarthy's influence in computer science ranges from the invention of LISP and time-sharing to the coining of the term AI and the founding of the AI laboratory at Stanford University. One of the foremost figures in computer sciences, McCarthy has written papers which are widely referenced and stand as milestones of development over a wide range of topics. In this collection of reviews, McCarthy staunchly defends the importance of Artificial Intelligence research against its attackers; this book gathers McCarthy's reviews of books which discuss and criticize the future of AI. Here, McCarthy explores the larger questions associated with AI, such as the question of the nature of intelligence, of the acquisition and application of knowledge, and the question of the politics behind this research. He is the founder of AI which led to many achievements in the significant technological advancements.

  1. WHO AND WHERE: THE COUNTERCULTURE (Turner)

Stewart brand:

The Catalog hunted to "catalyze the emergence of a realm of personal power" by making soft technology available to people eager to create sustainable communities. Brand went on to found a number of do-good organizations, including the WELL or Whole Earth Electronic Link (an early online community); the Global Business Network (a futurist consulting firm); and the Long Now Foundation (dedicated to encouraging long-term thinking). He is the author of several books and many articles, ranging in focus from the psychedelic rituals of Native Americans to a systems analysis of "buildings in time." Today, he and his wife live on a tugboat in Sausalito, CA. Turner notes that for Ehrlich and Holm, and the young Stewart Brand, cultural activities such as politics, art, conversation, and play took on a deep significance for the survival of the species. When humans threatened to destroy themselves with Nuclear weapons, concrete expressions of culture offered a way to help them to move forward and escape total destruction. They played a big role in keeping the world as a safe place and I call them peace keepers. Turner also notes that his search for individual liberty guided to a decade- long migration among a wide variety of bohemian, scientific and academic communities.

"When his Whole Earth Catalog became a forum in which such communities met, Brand began to see how the systems orientation of Paul Ehrlich's population biology, combined with new, countercultural models of living, might offer an appealing individualistic lifestyle, not only for him, but also for anyone else who could abandon the halls of bureaucratic America.   Stewart Brand is here with Army-length hair in 1961.

Figure: Hacker

The central theme of the book is that several fields of contemporary science and philosophy point in the same direction: intelligence is not organized in a centralized structure but much more like a bee-hive of small simple components. Kelly applies this view to bureaucratic organizations, intelligent computers, and to the human brain."Kevin outlines eight "generative": authenticity, accessibility, immediacy, interpretation, personalization, patronage, embodiment, findability. (I've reordered them as I find "aaiippef" makes it a bit easier to remember them all.) He defines a "generative" as "a quality or attribute that must be generated, grown, cultivated, and nurtured. It cannot be copied, cloned, faked, replicated, counterfeited, or reproduced" (George, 2005). This list is an excellent starting point for economic models in the digital world. These eight things cannot be copied. These are the things that people will be willing to pay for. These are the things that can be made to be more valuable through leveraging the abundance of imitable goods. Kevin notes that "more importantly, I think, the types of economic models derived from this thinking allow us to take advantage of the abundance of digital information rather than fearing it. This sort of thinking allows us to view digital technology as a blessing rather than a curse". Nowadays, he is Chairman of the Board of  a non-profit organization aimed at cataloging and identifying every living species on earth. His contribution to technology called the third culture. Back then the advancements in the Science was disregarded, but the culture was knows as music, literature and etc. Even though the developments help to strengthen the culture it was regarded and was not cool at all. Then the third culture appeared. Kevin's new third culture is a brood of science. It's a pop culture based in technology, for the good of technology. In the last two decades, as technology hyper flooded our cultural environment, the gravity of technology simply became too hard to disregard. For this current generation of Nintendo kids, their technology is their culture. When they reached the point of creating the current trends, the next witty thing happened Scientists became cool.

United Horse

United Horse
United Horse
Is it illegal to butcher and sell horse meat in the United States?

Before you guys freak out on me. I am 100% against horse slaughter and would rather eat my foot than eat horse meat.
But these people are offering meat horses on craigslist for $25 I realize that selling horses too slaughter is legal and butchering them is. But I thought actually selling the meat to someone in the united states was illegal? This man is actually butchering the horses himself and then selling it one craigslist.

Jenn, these people who are selling this stuff are most likely not in the United States- horse slaughter is banned by federal law here, and it's been illegal since October of 2007, which was when "W." signed the anti slaughter bill into law and the last of the plants in the US closed down. There were only 3 left by that time, one in Illinois and two in Texas- and they've all ceased operations since.I too am revolted by slaughter, at least to a degree- but I ALSO RECOGNIZE that it is a NECESSARY EVIL of modern life and society, and the ban on it has been an UNMITIGATED DISASTER for the entire horse industry in this country. Horses are being ABANDONED and left to starve and die of disease in RECORD NUMBERS nationwide- and the number of horses being shipped across the borders to Mexico and Canada has quadrupled or even quintupled in some areas, especially in the border states. There are still auction houses around which are known to be frequented by killer buyers from Canada- I live near the one in New Holland, PA, so I know what I 'm talking about. These auctions are doing a record business, especially now with the economy in such dire straits and with so many people out of work and facing foreclosure on their homes. People are losing their jobs right and left, and it's estimated by some experts that upwards of 8 MILLION families will lose their homes to foreclosure just in 2009 ALONE, Jenn. Currently, there are also about 15 million people out of work in this country, many of whom have been in that category for a year or more. Many of these people are or were horse owners, Jenn- and a lot of them are being forced to choose between feeding their kids, paying a mortgage, and feeding their horses- and in a situation that DIRE, who do YOU THINK is going to LOSE OUT? If you said the horses, then you've got it right.

Human lives ALWAYS take precedence over the lives of any animals, and this includes animals like horses, which incidentally are considered to be LIVESTOCK, NOT PETS, under the laws of ALL 50 states. People are turning their horses loose or putting them on trucks headed for the border because they can't afford to feed them and there is NO MARKET in which to sell them- the bottom dropped out of the domestic market about the time slaughter was banned a couple years ago, and it HASN'T RECOVERED. Euthanasia is an option for only a precious few people who can't keep their horses, because euthanasia is EXPENSIVE, Jenn. It can cost upwards of $500 in some areas just to destroy ONE horse, never mind a whole herd of them- and that's just for the drugs to do the job. It doesn't include fees for the farm call from the vet or all the disposal costs afterwords. Horses are big animals, and they have large carcasses which cannot simply be dumped somewhere and forgotten about. Horse carcasses have to be buried in the right size hole, or they must be rendered and turned into glue or leather. Carcasses from horses which have been euthanized can NEVER BE USED AS FOOD, however, because the drugs used to kill the animal are POISONOUS to other animals and to people. If it can kill a horse, it can kill YOU, TOO.Are you starting to see yet why I feel that banning horse slaughter was an incredibly short sighted, STUPID thing for George Bush to have done? All these horses which are being abandoned have nowhere to go- and a lot of them have ended up dying HORRIBLE DEATHS from starvation and diseases like colic and founder, Jenn. The rescues are overwhelmed, and the vast majority of them are way underfunded and understaffed. There simply AREN'T enough homes available for the all the unwanted animals anymore. To make things even worse, there's been a drought in most of the prime hay producing states for the last few growing seasons. This has led to crop failures and a NATIONWIDE HAY SHORTAGE- one that has meant that in some areas, there is no hay available at ALL, or what is around is of poor quality and can't be fed to horses. Horses can't eat just any hay, as well you know. Cattle feed can't be fed to them either- it contains ingredients which can KILL horses.

Then there's the semantics of the situation. We need to have slaughter as an option because we need to have a way to dispose of all the horses which are too old, ill, or lame to work anymore, as well as those animals which have behavior or psychological issues that make them a threat to themselves, other horses, and to people. We ALSO need a way of disposing of the tens of thousands of lame, sick, overbred, inbred, often INSANE young ex racehorses which come off this country's tracks every fall. Most of these horses are animals which have no future, because they were never bred to have one. Slaughter provided a means of disposing of these animals, and helped to keep the overall horse population in check- and with it banned, the system has become overrun with useless animals which nobody wants and which are a liability to themselves and others. I know that's heartbreaking to people like you, but it's also the TRUTH. Besides, I don't know if you realize this or not, but in the rest of the world beyond the US, horse meat is a highly prized, sought after DELICACY, especially young horse meat. There are countries all over the world which view horses in the same way that we view cattle and hogs, Jenn. In some of those places, the idea of killing a cow or pig for meat is as reprehensible to the people there as the killing of horses is to us here. This is particularly true in parts of Asia, the Middle East, and in the Pacific Rim countries. The United States is the ONLY nation on Earth which has a cultural taboo against consuming horses for food- and our OWN record is less than pristine, might I add. Nobody else feels the way we do about this subject- and a lot of our allied nations actually tend to snicker at us because we have such an attitude towards it. Don't think they don't. If we brought back the slaughter plants, then perhaps some of the overpopulation problems would begin to correct themselves, and maybe some of the pressure would finally be taken off the rescues and the other organizations which are trying to save all these unwanted animals. As awful as slaughter is, it's certainly better than the situation which presently exists. These animals which are getting sent across the borders deserve better than they are getting.

How to Identify Horse Racing Tracks That Riders Fancy

The Horse racing has become a popular sporting event like any other sports competitions. Thus the demand for preparing for the horse racing is increasing rapidly. You can go at different places to see the horse racing or to place the betting on the horses which you desire. One important thing for any game or sport event is the venue or the field on which you are going to conduct the competitions. For such kind of competition, big horse racking tracks are formed.

Such horse racing tracks are having different names in different countries. In United States, it is recognized with the name as racing tracks. Whereas in other English speaking countries in is distinguished with the name of horse racecourses. The local term used of horse racing tracks is hippodrome. It is taken from the Latin language.

The big and renowned racing tracks for horse racing are in more than 36 countries. They are governed by authorities prevailing in that country. Some of the countries having such spacious horse racing tracks are Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Ireland, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and United States etc.

The racetrack conditions also matter a lot while arranging the horse racing competition for particular horses. All types of racetracks are not suitable for all racing horses. The conditions of racecourses are muddy, sloppy, frozen, soft, yielding, heavy, firm, slow, fast, good, hard etc. Such surface of racetracks matter a lot for the horse riders also.

The main difference between muddy and sloppy horse racing tacks is that the muddy tracks are sometimes beneficial for some horse, whereas sloppy tracks are the risk factor for all the horses and jockeys. The slow and the fast surface of racetracks decide the time required for the horses to complete the race. Depending on the weather conditions, the tracks can be frozen or hard. Thus this type is also considered for preparing the horses for racing.

The horse racing tracks are formed generally for two to four miles races. Thus such big area is used for the way for running the horses and it is surrounded with the sitting arrangement. All the bettors sit here and watch the race for betting. They are properly sheltered.

The horse racing tracks are based on the type of horse racing take place there. If it is the normal flat racing then soft and firm tracks are formed. For the jump racing with hurdles, the use of muddy tracks or special tracks with fences are formed. For the harness racing the racetracks are wider than the other ones as it require more space for horses with carts.

Review of Omega Milestone 1941 Museum Collection

There is no secret that Omega watches are among the most beloved watches all over the world. Firstly released in December 1983, the iconic Omega Museum Collection is specially released to combine the brand's historical milestones with current advanced technology. Every year, Omega selects a classic and remarkable timepiece that has over 50 years' history to creating a brand new innovated version model. Here I'm proud to present its ninth release the Milestone 1941 chronograph watch.

The new timepiece is closely based upon the stainless steel CK2080 model Omega introduced in 1938. During that time, the CK2080 was particular favored by most top-ranking officers of the military. In particular, the new one also inspired from a specific example dating to 1941, which ended up being auctioned off at 2007's Omegamania event.

Compared to the former versions, New Milestone 1941 is added into modern advanced technology. It features 38mm case in 18-karat white gold with a black alligator strap and white gold buckle. It runs off an exclusive Omega calibre 3203 movement. The manual-winding chronograph is a COSC-certified chronometer and features Omega's Co-Axial escapement with a free sprung balance as well as a column wheel chronograph mechanism. The black varnished dial features a telemetric scale on its first outer ring graduated in kilometres per hour, a minute track on its second outer ring and a snail tachymetric scale on the inner ring based on 1000 units per hour. The numerals and indexes have been coated with Super-LumiNova to make sure the model can easily tell time in any light occasion. What's more, it has two sub-dials: a 30 minute chronograph recorder at 3 o' clock and small seconds counter at 9 o' clock. Even there are two screws presenting in the moving endpieces, one to secure the alligator strap, and the other to connect the components to the case itself.

I'm sure all addicts of vintage military watches will happy with the model. While, I regret that it will be produced in limited 1,941 pieces all over the globe.

I'm a watch addict who like share any information and design toward Omega watches. Hope you can share any thinking and comment toward my original articles in my blog http://www.exacthandbag.net.

Wearing the correct cufflinks for the right occasion and outfit is important, more so when you are attending an important event. With the media and fashion critics ready to get stories, you never know what will be said, so it is better to be safe and use the right cufflinks. Some have historic touches to them with replicas of drawings that made some mark years back while some are symbolic. Examples are the Stunning Love Knot Cufflinks and the Vintage Pistol Gun Cufflinks. Some professions are so lucky such as those of doctors because there is the Medical Stethoscope Doctor Cufflinks that are designed like a stethoscope and are best for Doctors.

Our online collection of cufflinks includes the batman cufflinks. Batman cufflinks you will find are the Classic Silver and New Silver Batman Cufflinks. These batman cufflinks are pretty and are good for those special events you frequent. The Classic and New Silver Batman Cufflinks are for the Dark Knight types and have been designed for those of you who are dark and want to appear mysterious. So if you would like to display such characteristics, you better get this batman cufflink.

The Batman cufflinks are made of silver and rhodium and they give the impression of that all-important man whenever you go. The estimated population of the United States is 304,854,499. The outstanding public Debt is?

$10,158,071,018,235.18 So each citizen's share of this debt is $33,321.05. As of 05 Oct 2008 at 10:32:30 PM GMT. According to the "U.S. National Debt Clock." ( o _ 0 ) That's insane! What are you thoughts, if any on this catastrophe?

But there are only 140 million who PAY TAXES. Now do the math. We could have given every taxpayer 1 million, let us invest and saved $$ compared to bailout....WHICH included 151 BILLION in more pork barrel spending. I do not own a credit card....If I can't afford it, I don't need it. Financed house for $60,000 ($300k elsewhere), my one vice--a convertible for $28,000......that and utilities/food is all I owe.
Give the President a line item veto. Abolish the pork that keeps getting these bums elected. Institute a flat tax......so even if you make <10k you pay your share. They make it paycheck to paycheck like the rest of us.....why give then $5,000 bonuses in Jan?

Software Program for Time Clocking

In a typical office set-up, each and every employee is assigned with a computer unit to work with. Utilizing this given and available reason would translate to the ability of tracking employee’s time clocking through their computers.

What happens here is that clocking software will be installed in the computer assigned to the employee so that his log-in and log-out times can be monitored and tracked. It is helpful to know that this clocking system comes in two forms: one is single while the other is for the network.

The single clocking system is installed is made possible to run by individual computer or per employee basis. All the employee needs to do is to run the program and log-in using his personal password to clock in and out. This system then tracks monitors and reports the day in and day out time of employees. Information then from this report is fed as input to the payroll process.

The other system is the Network clocking. With this, employees get into the program by accessing the network copy and clocks in through this. This works in the same principle as that of the single clocking system, just that in terms of volume of course – like having more employees, it would make more sense as it deems more practical and would make it easier to track records.

There are a number of advantages to the use of a clocking system. This provides the company or business an effective and efficient means of tracking time ins and outs of employees thus eliminating the use of Bundy clocks or manual swiping. This of course lessens the administrative needs and provides a more accurate means of implementing the process.
