Why do all women think they can dance?

Large percentages of women think they are great dancers. Why? Is it because men want sex so bad that there will always be some man out in a club who tries hitting on these bad dancing women. And these men will tell them stupid things to get laid like "You dance amazing". WHAT IS THE DEAL?

Every woman thinks if you do not want to dance, then you most likely can't dance, which then puts us in a bad position when we do get on the dance floor to sarisfy the woman's insatiable need to dance.

Here is my thought on dancing. If you went to a club or a wedding or whatever and everyone was dancing to the beats, how many people would look hot dancing (or moving) if you turned the music off and they kept going. Not many. They would look stupid. The woman who still looks good dancing after the music is turned off is the woman who can dance.

Not "All" women think they are good dancers. The deal is that women don't worry about what they look like on the dance floor, like men do. A lot of women who go to clubs and/ or bars, go to have fun. Not pick up on guys. The ones that do go to pick guys up know they can get a guy no matter what. So what women look like dancing doesn't matter to either group of these women. Then last of all the small group of women who do care what they look like dancing....... Either don't go to clubs, or go and just don't dance. Think about it women don't need to dance to be noticed. True there is a double standard when it comes to dancing, but it's us men that put it on or self's. If more men would just loosen up and have fun if they choose to dance or not , there wouldn't be so much pressure on men to dance well. A majority of women don't care if you can dance, they just want to have fun with you. So as long as your having fun it doesn't matter. Sure ther might be a few jokes if you can't dance. but that's all they are jokes. Most of these joke will by the way come from men not women. My point is lighten up and have fun.

For dancing these two programmes Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars have been instrumental in getting dancing out to the masses.
Come Dancing was actually one of televisions longest running shows but towards the end of its life in 1998, popularity had severely dropped. It was deemed tacky and boring. The rooms seemed poorly lit in the halls the dancers were performing in and it looked very dated. The problem was, once Come Dancing had come off the air, there was no form of ballroom or Latin dancing shown on the television in the UK.

Strictly Come Dancing was first shown in 2004 and has grown and grown to become one of the most viewed television programmes on the BBC. Also spawning the magazine show Strictly Come Dancing It Takes Two with Claudia Winkleman. The show has made ballroom and Latin dancing cool again basically. They use modern music to dance to, use different dance steps combined with the classic and required dance steps and add lots of entertainment.
The celebrity aspect of course is a big draw for viewers. Many people root for their favourite star should they be a sportsman or woman in the field they like or their favourite soap star.

The costumes are an extremely large part of the show, so much so that they get individually discussed on the It Takes Two programme on a Friday. All professional dancers understand the effect a costume has on a dance for many reasons.

Dance costumes are specifically designed and constructed to aid the dancer in each particular dance, to be comfortable, unrestrictive and enhance the dancer's for the dance. Dance is such a visual sport that costumes do play a huge role and they also help the dancer get into the role within the routine. A ballroom costume for example will be flowing and give a graceful feel whilst an argentine tango costumes will be fitted and more revealing to match the style of the dance. Dance costumes are now far more comfortable and allow for far more movement today. Lycra and other technical fabrics allow the costumes designer to design the most intricate and show stopping clothing. You only need to look at the latest televisions programmes for this.

Colour plays a huge role in the look of the costumes which then, in turn, can portray a different image of the dance. A classic and beautiful waltz costume would suit a pastel shade whereas for a fiery tango, it would be red or black for example, most definitely not a pastel shade. It is rare to see a dance costume made fully in a patterned fabric. A patterned fabric can distort the body and in competitive dance, it can hinder dancers as the judge cannot correctly see the alignment of the body.

When discussing dance costumes, the main focus is on usually on the female costume but male costumes are just as important albeit more understated. It is very important for the male costumes to complement the females in style and often a hint of the same colour is integrated into the male costume as well. A man's costume must enable him to lift the female if the dance requires it and in routines where he must slide along the floor, knee protection pads for example need to be added. Shirts need to be secured so that they do not untuck.

The correct ballroom dancewear and dance costumes are imperative to a dance routine.

Lament For The Son Of Usnech

When sun sets down the Mountains of Kerry and follows the River Shanon to the mighty Atlantic, the Emerald Isle shines to the sparkle of the myriad of stars and the rays of the moon. Along the plains filled with peat bogs and heaths magic makes its appearance in the cool of the evening; sweet smelling grasses sway to and fro with the spirit of the faeries. Little people raise themselves from the mosses and lichens and go along their busy ways in gathering the gold for their crock near the sparkling coloured rainbow; the spirits whisper their count in the Gaelic tongue of old.

The peaceful evenings with brilliant lit heavens, at one time in the recent past, shone on a lantern lit cottage in the county of Limerick. Blind Eamus McNaught had his little cottage which he shared with his devoted wife Mary Ellen; a woman faithful to him even when sight was deprived. A bonny bairn of a lass was her gift to him and she cared for the both of her charges equally.

Eamus McNaught's sight was in the soft touch of the pretty features and red hair of his Mary Ellen; his lips accepted the full warmth of his wife's affection, and her hug with her slim and gracious body added its charms. He took pleasure in the sound of the cooing and gurgling of chubby little Daphne. The two wonderful creatures were a blessing in his life, and he never forgot in the Sunday mass to offer his prayers for them.

Eamus McNaught's gift to his Mary Ellen and little Daphne was the tunes played on his fiddle and sung by his tenor voice in the cool of the evenings. The playing on the strings was an inheritance from his father to his younger son, and Eamus's rendered songs had the blessed semblance of his sweet-voiced mother. Both the father and mother of Eamus McNaught lived the remainder of their golden years in the loving care of the Sisters of Charity in their convent nearby.

The wee people in their dress of bright green with silver buckles and pretty ribbons stopped in their busy ways and listened to the sweet music. Magic touched their tiny feet and bells tinkled on the green of their shining brogues as they jigged to the songs of the mountains of Kerry with loughs of sweet water, the flowing waters of the river Barrow in the southeast, and the mighty river Corrib in the west.

On the festive nights the blind fiddler Eamus McNaught played the fiddle for young people to dance in the town of Limerick's main square. The jig 'Irish Rose' was the favourite as the dancers ramrod straight, jigged with gaiety to their steps keeping tune to the scrape of his violin. His pleasant tenor voice joined the strings as he played and sang the songs of the blind poet Turlouch Carolan.

And so, at every pause, he was offered a good drink and also slices of cake. It was the least one could do for the wreck of a young man who gave his sight in service to the crown. Eamus McNaught, tall and well built in youthful years did not show his loss on his rough-hewn features; only a smile was etched on his thin lips. And he was liked as a musician; nobody could make the young and even the elder ones dance as he could.

He played so well on the strings of his fiddle, and trilled the songs, which bewitched people to dance to the rhythm of the tunes; even those with clumsy feet or beginners needed no persuasion. The leaders of parties arranged for him from the beginning of the year that he would not fail them. And indeed at weddings, christening and feast days his fiddle and voice would spin the tunes of the 'Oft in a Stilly Night', 'The Last Rose of Summer,' and even the tale of 'Lalla Rookh', an Indian princess. His appreciative audience laughed with him as he sung of the humorous exploits of 'The Irish Washerwoman'.

How he was spoiled! How well he was treated! Good old Eamus McNaught must be looked after; everywhere he played he was treated better than an itinerant paid musician. He was regarded almost as a friend to those who invited him to play. From Galaway and Cork, from the rivers Shannon and Boyne and from the mountains of Kerry to the southeast to Corrib in the west he was invited to play.

In the fair city of Dublin they good folk raised a glass as he sung of the heroics of Edwin Macneil and Roger Casement. Along the coast fishermen off their boats filled with herring, whiting and mackerel, the largesse of the mighty Atlantic, heard the rhythm of Hughs, 'The West with Pale Fishes,' and the tale of 'Barbara Allen' written by a Irish writer unknown.

Eamus McNaught gave his music freely to those devoted in their vows; black-robed nuns showed their pleasure through their cowled austere features when the words sounded of the fair Virgin; the priests in their black clerical dress let the their lace boots tap with the rhythm of Michael Moore, 'Time Present and Time Past', and 'Blow Your Trumpets Blow'; and the brown cowled friars shuffled their sandaled feet to the tunes ‘Heigh-ho the Holly' and ‘Christ of his Gentleness'.

Eamus McNaught never refused any invitation, always accompanied by a good soul as his Mary Ellen was busy with her Daphne and again blessed with a coming birth.  The good man knew that his wife and his little girl were properly attended to; both he and his wife were from large trusting families who members gave their time willingly and in good grace to one another. And there was always a spinster aunt or cousin who looked forward in their lonely years to spend time with a relative. Off course the wee ones were there and their magic was everywhere in the little cottage.

He never refused any request for a jig to be spun on his fiddle or any lifting tune to be sung from his vibrant tenor voice. He accepted the hospitality with gratefulness from his hosts, accepted the coin needed for his family's bread, and partook of the refreshments offered; he ate and drank sparingly, everything slowly, without hurrying himself.

But time was running out for Eamus Mcnaught after a few pleasure years as he started to cough. At first it was slight; and in the final days he coughed his soul out.  It was one of those hard wet coughs coupled with phlegms of black, which seemed to shake and tear the chest. To see him thus one did not know he had not long to live; for he would not play much longer, and who would make them dance. "Poor Eamus McNaught is worn out. He won't last long!" they gossiped amoungst themselves.

It was the mark of his wound in the volunteer service to the royal king in the other island across the sea. He had donned the khaki, and shouldered the rifle and marched to the tune of "Tipperary". The mustard gas that fumed from the machines of the men in gray and spiked helmets flooded the trenches. There was no prior warning and the protective mask was not arranged quickly enough and he suffered blindness, and the inside of his body was corrupted by the curse of the cancerous plague.

He marched blindly with his hands on the shoulders of either a man from the bogs or a cockney from the sound of Bow Bells; in turn he felt the hands on his shoulders from another sufferer. Little did he know that the line was seemingly endless, which direct the wounded to treatment. From the first-aid station in the field to the military hospital, the doctors shook their heads and told him of a few years of life.

Pension and a white cane were given and Eamus Mcnaught returned to the land of the Gaels. He took up the fiddle again and the wee folks jigged to the rhythm together with the rest of the folk from the mountains of Kerry to the River Shannon.

"Lament for the Sons of Usnech" was sung as the remains of Eamus Mcnaught were laid to rest. Yet, Eamus McNaught lives on in spirit and he played the fiddle for young people to dance. The wee ones knew as in the cool of a summer's night when the heavens were lit by countless shining lights the sweet sounds of 'Danny Boy', 'My Irish Rose' could be heard in the whisper of the gentle winds.

The Ancient Olympic Games in Greece and China

The ancient Olympic Games were a four-yearly event with sporting activities as its main content and the cessation of hostilities among the city states in Greece as its main characteristic. In those days, China also experienced divisions from time to time. There were the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) and the Period of Warring States (475-221 BC) during the Zhou Dynasty before the First Emperor of Qin (259-210 BC) unified the whole Chinese empire. Following the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220), the main part of China was divided again during the Period of Three Kingdoms (220-280), to be reunified under the Jin court. As in ancient Greece, there were of course intervals of peace between wars among the states or kingdoms---not as a result of the proclamation of truce during the Olympic Games which were non-existent in ancient China, but as a result of diplomatic manoeuvres or military deterrent forces. After all, there is the universal law of "split after long unity and unity after long split," as Chinese philosophers put it.

However, the non-existence of Games does not necessarily mean non-existence of sports. As a matter of face, there are sports whenever and wherever there are human activities. Man must take up sports to keep fit for survival and amuse themselves after work. In order to gather food , hunters in the palaeolithic times not only invented tools, such as stone axes, balls, hooks, spearheads and nets, but also learned how to use them more efficiently, knowing that only with a stronger physique and the ability to run and swim faster, jump higher and throw a projectile farther and with greater precision could they catch more game and fish. This was the origin of the running, jumping, throwing and swimming events which figure so largely in the Olympic Games today, and whose origin can only be attributed to human instincts rather than to a particular race or individual at a particular time. The stone balls excavated in Gaoyang County in China's Shanxi Province date back to 100,000 years and are supposed to have been used not only in hunting, but also in throwing contests as athletes do in shot putting today. Archery, another Olympic event, has appeared in the mythology of many nations. Odyssey was said to have slain his wife's suitors with his bow and arrows. A Chinese legend has it that during the Yao times many thousand years ago, a marksman named Hou Yi shot down nine of the 10suns in the sky which had scorched all plants on the earth. Even today, bows and arrows are still used among many ethnic groups in China as a weapon to kill animals and in archery as a popular sporting event.

In ancient times men engaged themselves not only in flight with nature, but also in flight among themselves. Therefore sport has yet another aim: to improve the ability to beat the enemy, with or without weapons. During the rule of the Yellow Emperor, who has been held as the first ancestor of the Chinese nation, a rebel tribe headed by Chiyou trained his warriors in fighting with cow horns fastened to the head, which was included in the "one hundred amusements" and developed into various forms of wrestling in later generations. Military training in ancient China included all kinds of martial arts, such as wrestling, pugilism, fencing, tripodlifting, horse-racing, stone-throwing, hunting and swimming. During the Spring and Autumn Period, a high-ranking official in Qi state named Guan Zhong (?-645 BC) ordered the building of swimming pools by conducting the water of three rivers and awarded heavy prizes to good swimmers among his "water troops." A copper pot excavated in Chengdu in Sichuan Province is inscribed with a battle on water in those days. Among the Greeks there is note of occasional swimming races, and a famous boxer swam as a part of his training.

Sports also served military purposes in a ancient Greece, especially in Sparta where all citizens received stoic military training from early childhood, in almost the same sports as in ancient China. According to historical records written during the Period of Warring States, the Chinese kings and emperors ordered their officers to teach archery, charioteering and wrestling in winter and "required the populace to spend six hours farming and two hours practicing martial arts every day."

The ancient Chinese and Greek civilizations shared another thing in common in sporting activities, that is, they were often combined with dancing. A pot in the Neolithic Age excavated in Qinghai Province's Datong County shows on the inside surface three groups of dancers. It is said that in those times China was hit by frequent torrential rains and floods and people suffered a lot from unbroken spells of wet weather. In order to relax their stiffened bones and muscles and dispel their gloomy moods, they would dance a kind of dance that "could conduct the flow of blood and vital energy in the body." The military training in Sparta also included dances and there were choreographic competitions at the ancient Olympic Games. Actually there was little or no difference between physical exercises and dances as is the case with such modern sports as figure skating and artistic and rhythmic gymnastics.

What should be emphasized here is that sports were included in the educational system both in ancient China and Greece. During the Zhou Dynasty and the previous Xia (21st---16th century BC) and Shang (16th---11th century BC) dynasties, all seats of learning were at the same time places for teaching martial arts. The great Chinese philosopher and Educationist Confucius (551-479 BC) was also a good athlete in archery and charioteering and took an active part in fishing, hunting, excursions and hill-climbing. Paying equal attention to moral, intellectual and physical development of his 3,000 pupils, he carried out an educational system of "Six Arts," namely, rituals, music, archery, charioteering, writing and mathematics, which were supplementary to each other. In archery, for instance, he insisted on proper conduct, or what we call "sportsmanship" today, pointing out that an archer should do his best to win and what's more important, "be modest and observe rituals." Besides, he advised people to keep a good eating habit, to abstain from stale dish and meat and not to talk when taking a meal. Such guiding principles were similar to those of the great Greek philosopher Plato (428-348 BC) who held that physical training and sanitation should become an important part of education and that one should train his physique through sports and mould his temperament through music. The curricula at his time included gymnastics, which was broadened to embrace hygiene and dietetics. The Greek gymnasium also taught philosophy, literature and music, and public libraries were nearby.

It is interesting to note that both Chinese and Greek educationists in ancient times emphasized that physical training should suit different ages. According to the Chinese classic work Li Ji (Book of Rites), children should learn "civilian dances" at 13, "martial dances" at 15, and archery and charioteering at older ages. Plato also advocated different sports for different age groups---music and singing for 7-12, dancing, wrestling, archery and horsemanship for 12-17 and more physical training for 17-20.

Whether out of historical necessity or contingency, sports in both ancient China and Greece were closely combined with productive labour, military training, dancing and the whole educational system, thus providing an ideological foundation for China's ready acceptance of the modern Olympic ideals, which were deeply rooted in the ancient Greek society, in spite of the cessation of Olympic Games for15 centuries.

What is the name of the compliation or the composer of the classical music where he was influenced by animals?

I listened to it when I was in elementary school and don't remember who it is. I just remember her saying it about being a zoo or he was influenced by animals. I think one song is about the coo-koo but I'm not sure if its the same guy.

Saint-Saens - Carnival of the Animals. Later on the American poet and humorist Ogden Nash wrote funny poems to go along with each piece. (Much later on, so did Weird Al - but his poems reinterpret the music - I seem to recall one about a Killer Poodle . . . too strange for kids.)

A Review of Sweet Tea; a CD by Hills Rolling

Whatever one could say about Hills Rolling, the moniker of one-man band Trey McGriff, you can't accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page he lists as influences about one hundred or so bands and musicians. There are old schoolers (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), new schoolers ( The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur, Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). No doubt this is in part a smart-ass commentary on the "what are your influences" question. It is also a list of people he has most likely listened to and is another way of saying that all the music he has heard, or for that matter, everything he has been through, is recorded by the brain, swished around by time, and reflected in his songs. Loves, hates, sounds, tastes, it's all in your head. Musically and lyrically, this message comes through loud and clear on his CD Sweet Tea.

With all this in his musical blender, he has come up with a record that is like a meal with different foods, different flavors, and quite tasty. Sweet Tea is not an album with a theme or unified sound per say, but the strength of the songs and the individualism of his voice and musical palette steers the record clear of being a hodgepodge of stuff. He is not intellectually and intentionally going from style to style as if he's searching for an identity, or flailing about hoping to catch the listener's ear. The songs are well-crafted and come from his heart, making the music distinctly and honestly Hills Rolling. Not unlike a jazz artist who expresses his individual voice on an album by having a ballad, swing numbers, a blues and a song with a Latin flavor.

"Crazie" opens the record with a catchy bit of vintage hard rock that is the '08 answer to "Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo" by Rick Derringer. The macho stance of that song is replaced by the simple wonder of gettin' down with a beautiful girl that's made him so crazy that "I don't know what to do / I'm gettin' dizzy I'm shakin' in my shoes." The music works well with the song, alternating between hard bar chord guitar licks and trippy tremolo/vibrato-soaked guitar leads. His pop sensibility keeps everything tight, short and sweet like the tea. Hip hop drums open "Not Again", then the song gives way to the kind of acoustic/electric guitar-based rock that never goes out of style. Percussion and a home boy chorus give the song a party feel despite the grimness of the song's slice of life lyrics: "I just live day to day / barely keepin' my head above the water / Not again got all these feelings trapped inside me / Not again can't pay the bills I think I'm sinking your way . . . I'm so lonely / some day / we'll ride the waves into the sun."

This cut deftly combines a pleasant tune with grimness, humor, and hope all rolled into one. "Watching The Waves" is psychedelic rock by way of the Cure, with a beer soaked college kid trippin' on playing some simple guitar chords and having a moment with his friends. The harmonica captures the feeling of timeless, be-here-now grooviness that puts you right there on the beach, as McGriff chants "Standing in the ocean watching the waves roll by, roll by."

One of McGriff's other musical projects is in the mode of experimental electronica and is called SomeWhere OutHere. The song "Middle of Nowhere" hints in this direction. Starting with an electronic drum pulse and droning bass with a spacey guitar riff ala New Order, this piece is a soundtrack to doing . . . whatever. Weird sounds come in and out of focus as the interlocking licks and drum beat march on. Whereas these elements might seem abstract on another record, here the music maintains a grassroots, funky, down home feeling.

In her October 2007 article in the New Yorker, author Sasha Frere-Jones, the best music writer around I must add, wrote that, unlike rock from the 50's through the 80's, twenty-first century indie rock is totally devoid of the blues and soul, the root-feeding soil of so much great music. This leaves indie rock and its offshoots, in his words, "full of lassitude and monotony." No problem with that here. Hills Rolling McGriff is from Georgia or thereabouts, so the blues, soul and country are in his blood. Perhaps that is what helps blend the musical stew he's cookin' up on Sweet Tea. This CD is further proof that while commercial rock and pop are rotting and twisting in the wind, these are great days for music down here where just us folks are living.
