Renting an apartment - how to hang things securely on the wall without damaging the walls?

I'm moving out and renting a place closer to the city. I have a full size mirror, a couple of paintings, a clock and a notice board I want to hang on the walls.
But if I damage the walls (they're plaster walls), I'll lose part or all my bond!

Have you checked out those hooks advertised on HSN and all the home shopping networks.. They only put a pin size hole in wall and are guaranteed to hold a up to 150 lbs.

We've uncovered something special, something we've not seen the likes of since the   original Slot-1 Celeron C300A of yore, something wonderful. No, it's not full of stars, but it is full of silicon. We've uncovered the latest Intel budget dual-core processor and by Jove, it overclocks more crazily than a supermodel on an economy class flight.

On first impressions, the E7200 seems unremarkable, other than a bargain. Running at a stock 2.53GHz on a 1,066MHz FSB it's built on a 45nm process with 3MB L2 cache and can be snapped up for around $l20. That alone makes it the best value Core 2 on the market. But hang on, this is built on the new 45nm process, which means it'll run very cool and with CPUs already running at 3.2GHz on the same process just how fast will this boy run?

Even under normal settings the performance is impressive with it running at 30°C just passively cooled with a cheap $15 cooler. Under load this rises to 50°C, but even that is more than acceptable for day-to-day work and incredible for passive cooling. Feeling brave we initially went straight for 3.2GHz running on a 337MHz FSB and even with the stock cooler we got a stable overclock.

Taking the FSB up to 350MHz showed the first signs of strain. It would boot into Vista, but bluescreen shortly after or during benchmarking. Switching to the Akasa Blue Aurora soon sorted that problem out and once again we were stable, running at 3.33GHz. That's 800MHz or 30 per cent faster. It was, unfortunately, at this point our fun ran out, as beyond 350MHz our chosen motherboard, a budget ASUS P5LD2-X/1333 'lost' all the SATA hard drives. Even then it was happy to boot to the BIOS at up to a 390MHz FSB (3.7GHz) on the stock core voltage. Proving there's a lot of overclocking territory left to discover with this beauty.

Overclocking the processor is all about pushing up the front side bus speed. This not only affects the processor, but the memory speed. While many motherboards do enable you to 'clock-down' the memory bus it's always helpful to have performance memory parts installed, alongside your processor and performance cooler.

The first step to good overclocking has nothing to do with settings or indeed your hardware: it's to make sure you install your cooler correctly. That means don't overdo the thermal grease. A micron-thin film is all that's required, place a few blobs, push the heatsink on, remove it, wipe clean and then install it for a better contact. Of course, the BIOS is at the heart of overclocking, while Windows-based tools have somewhat alleviated the need for it, frankly this is still where the real work has to be done. An overclocking motherboard will, of course, greatly help as it will provide better recovery tools and more advanced tweaking options.

Sounds good except for the power supply. They went cheap on you there. You should be running at least 400W or more and try to get one with dual fans inside the power supply.

I too would suggest you shop around though.

The Atomic Clock - Always Accurate

If you look around your home, you'll likely find several timepieces of varying sizes. From the watch on your hand to the grandfather clock in the living room, and from the alarm clock in your bedroom to the computer clock on your desk, most people have several clocks available. And at any given time, few of those clocks will show precisely the same time. So how do you know which is really correct?

There are several ways of keeping time. The most commonly recognized is based on the Earth's movement through space. But those rotations are very large and the potential for gaining or losing seconds is incredible. A more precise method of timekeeping is atomic time. Very simply, atomic time measures the pulses and absorptions of electromagnetic waves. Generally, atomic time is considered to be the most accurate available.

When you choose an atomic clock, the clock's time is kept current through the use of radio signals between the nearest atomic time-keeping device and your clock. There are several of those devices around the world, including on in Colorado that controls many of the US atomic clocks.

Atomic time keeping has been around for more than a half century, but it's only been over the past few years that the technology is generally available at a reasonable price to the public. The first few atomic clocks were very austere models, meant to be accurate time keeping devices and nothing more. Today, there are plenty of options if you're looking for accuracy without sacrificing beauty.

Grandfather clocks are one of the most recent advances in atomic clock technology. Because these clocks depend on the swinging of a pendulum to keep track of time, they are notorious for gaining time right after they're wound and losing time as the clockworks run down. Some grandfather clocks no longer depend on the pendulum for timekeeping, making them more accurate. But more recently, the atomic clock works have been incorporated into grandfather clock cases. As is true with all atomic clocks, the atomic clocks in grandfather clock cases are periodically updated to be kept completely accurate.

Most people tend to truly believe that computers are right. After all, computers know the time and date automatically, right? But remember that someone set that date at the beginning of the computer's life, and that you may even have adjusted the time for daylight savings time at some point. If you want your computer clock to be always accurate, you can download a program that will have your computer periodically check in for the official atomic time in your time zone.

Over the ages, people have developed many methods and utilized many concepts for determining time. Sundials and hourglasses can give an idea, but are something less than accurate. Rotation of the sun, locations of stars and the rise and fall of tides have all been used to help account for the passage of hours, though they weren't accurate enough to count minutes or seconds. The atomic clock is man's latest step toward keeping an accurate track of time.

Imagine an analog clock with continuously and smoothly moving second's hand. The positions of the various hands indicate the distance moved(in a circular arc) and this is used to calculate elapsed time. Or imagine a sundial. The shadow's location indicates time.
But I dont think speed matters.

Steampunk DIY- where to find gears, clock parts, and other bits and bobs?

I am very interested in The steam-punk style and want to go about making some steam punk inspired jewelry/accessories I have access to a soldering iron and have some experience in making wire jewelry.

Look in junk shops and thrift stores, yard sales are good too. Try to find windup alarm clocks you can take apart. I recommend the "big ben" alarm clock if you can find it, lots of excellent brass gears! You could also look for sources on the internet, do a search for surplus hardware and electronics, a good site is American Science and Surplus, if you don't know them, check it out.

How Do Atomic Clocks Work?

If time is crucial to you or your office, consider investing in atomic clocks so that everyone knows exactly what time it is and everyone has the same time. These are the most accurate time keeping pieces you can get, and more and more businesses are using atomic wall clocks to make sure that accurate time sheets and appointments are kept.

But what are atomic clocks and why are they so much more accurate than regular clocks? A standard clock, whether wind-up, electric or battery operated, counts time by the number of "ticks" that a resonator makes. The resonator is the device that actually keeps track of time. In most clocks the resonator is either a swinging pendulum or (in digital clocks) oscillations in the power line (which is a bit different in the U.S. and in Europe).

Atomic clocks also use a resonator, but the resonator counts based on the resonance frequency of atoms. Resonance is the emission or absorption of microwave electromagnetic radiation by an atom. It is very regular, and no matter which atom of cesium used, the frequency of resonance is always exactly the same. This is why atomic clocks are so much more accurate than other clocks - the resonators in other clocks can be affected by lots of variables like temperature, moisture and atmospheric conditions. None of these affect the atoms, so the atomic clocks never lose or gain time.

Synchronization of Atomic Clocks

The reason all atomic clocks show the same time anywhere you go is because they don't each have their own cesium atom - this would be impossible because it's incredibly expensive and requires very precise conditions. Atomic clocks are actually receiving the time from a shared location where one of the world's few of the world's atomic clocks operates. A low -frequency radio signal broadcasts the time from that location to all atomic clocks within its range. There are currently approximately 200 atomic clocks world-wide in sixty countries.

In the United States, most atomic clocks used for home and offices are synchronized to the National Institutes of Standards and Technology atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado. The other official atomic clock is at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. and is the official time clock of the Department of Defense. Since both of these atomic clocks are within one second of each other over a million years of time, it is unlikely that time displayed on atomic wall clocks at the Pentagon will differ from the time displayed on an atomic clock in your home office!

How Do At-Home Clocks Get the Information from Master Atomic Clocks?

Global positioning satellites (GPS) in the skies above us transmit the signals from the official atomic clocks to individual receivers in atomic wall clocks and desk clocks all over the world. In other countries, the signal would come from whichever clock is the official atomic clock for that region, just as the one in Boulder, Colorado is the one for the United States.

These amazingly accurate atomic clocks are also responsible for the fact that all computers with built-in clocks are synchronized and accurate and keep time whether on or off. With such accurate time keeping and the use of GPS, you can be sure that your atomic clocks will let you know exactly what time it is, down to the nano-second!

Horror story help?

I'm creating a short horror story. ((Note it has to be short)) and I changed it up a bit where the murder is in the very beginning. And you see the brother killing his sister gruesomly and what not. and then he goes into the woods and dissapeares. Well I want the next part to be what happened earlier that day. as if it was happening like . "Cody woke up startled by the alarm clock." not... like it's past tense. like...as if it's looking back into the past as if was happening. I just don't know how to do that.
