How can I make moon sand easier to shape?
For school we're doing a Rat Island project, and my group needs more green clay for the grass on the project. So I went to a billion and one stores to try to find it. The closest thing was green moon sand.
The thing about moon sand is that it refuses to stay put once you shape it. Pick it up and put it on the mantel, and it crumbles to pieces. I've been thinking, "So how the heck will I be able to use this stuff on the project?
Would using water help? Mixing it with the small amount of white clay I have? HELP please, tomorrow's the last day we get to work on Rat Island!
homemade clay
Mixing only three magical ingredients--flour, salt and water--can give you everything you need to keep your preschoolers entertained for hours. The following recipe for homemade clay requires no cooking, and for kids, making the dough is half the fun
In a large bowl, stir 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water. For a smoother clay, you can add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Divide the clay into thirds and color each batch separately with 12 drops of food coloring (for more vibrant hues, try using a dab of cake-decorating coloring paste, which is available at party stores). For scented clay, you can add a few drops of peppermint extract to your green dough and lemon extract to the yellow dough.
Cover your work space with a plastic tablecloth and let your kids play with the dough. As they roll it out or shape it by hand, sprinkle extra flour on the table in case the dough feels too sticky. You might suggest to your kids that they make monsters, dogs, insects and other critters. Fake food, such as peas in a pod or hot dogs in buns, are sure hits. Younger kids can make interesting impressions in the dough with fork tines or a kitchen mallet. Cookie cutters work well on thick, rolled-out clay. Store any extra clay in sealed plastic bags. It will keep for about five days.
Edit: you can then add your moon sand to your home made clay for a more efect and it should stay togather .
